Amateur Radio is not Citizens Band (CB), the Family Radio Service (FRS), or the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS). However, it is open to anyone, and has much more potential. To become a ham radio operator you must first pass a written exam in order to obtain a license and station call sign issued by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Amateur Radio license study material may be found in libraries, book stores or online. For example, The Ham Radio License Manual by the ARRL.
